Learn how volunteering in or working with a school’s Parent Support Group can help your child’s education.

Many Singapore schools have set up Parent Support Groups (PSGs) in recent years. Parents who have the students’ interest at heart and passionate about service can consider joining PSGs. These groups comprise parents who meet regularly and who work with school personnel on programmes and projects that will benefit the students.

In some schools, the role of a PSG member includes that of serving as a communication channel for parents to provide constructive feedback on school policies and programme.  Your constructive feedback and valuable suggestions or ideas for improvements will benefit the school environment:
  • when you join the PSG and be part of a network of parents who work in partnership with the school; and/or
  • when you use the PSG as a communication platform, if this facility is offered in the PSG that serves your child’s school.

Communication is a two-way process that benefits the children, parents and the school. As a parent, your involvement in your child’s school life sends a clear signal to your child as a form of deep concern for them. This will in turn encourage them to adopt positive attitudes towards learning. With your active involvement, children will be motivated towards better personal development, have better attendance and they tend to participate more actively in learning and other school activities.

You will be better able to support and guide your child when you are well-informed about what is going on in your child’s school. By joining a PSG, you will also gain the support from other parents in your parenting endeavour through this network.

Schools benefit as your feedback will help to finetune practices that will help students learn and develop. When parents, teachers and the community have a common vision of improving the school, everyone’s strengths unite – all for the betterment of our children’s education.
